It is always in the midst of our darkest hours on earth that we are prompted to desperately search for the light. We fall into darkness when we search for our independence, which is our sense of self, amongst our peers and mentors instead of looking to our Creator for our reason for living and enlightenment.
Grace is not something that can be acquired by good works or of intelligent scopes of man's foolish ideas of greatness, but instead, grace is a gift received, when in man's utter defeat of his own humanity, he finally asks for Divine Guidance. It is man's experience of failure that holds him tightly fastened to the exploration of the unseen power of his Creator.
