The Principle of Hope in Step 2

It's February, and here at The Latest Thing, we focus on the principle of Step 2, Hope. The definition of hope is a feeling or desire for certain things to happen, a feeling of trust. Some may see it as the Light at the end of the proverbial tunnel (which is NOT a train, by the way!). This is the Open-mindedness part of our three essentials of AA which are Honesty, Open-mindedness, and Willingness. When we take step one and get honest, the next step requires us to be open-minded enough to believe that something greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity because, let's face it, our behaviors were crazy, insane behaviors! This step and its spiritual principle brings great relief for many… why? Because it is the principle of hope, something we had given up on when we were in the midst of our insane addictive illnesses. And this does not require a religious conviction; it is a very simple spiritual principle.

We can learn to "act as if," "suit up and show up," and begin to gain self-esteem by doing esteemable acts and watching our lives slowly improve. We can believe that God, or Buddha, or Allah, or your sponsor, or The Group Of Drunks, aka GOD, or the Ocean, or the sky, is restoring you to sanity; it honestly doesn't matter. It's trusting and gaining back hope. And knowing that YOU can NOT do it, nor could any human power, so coming to believe, whether quickly or slowly, is going to restore us to sanity again and allow us to rebuild our lives. And guess what? We aren't alone anymore, and never again!

At Gift of Recovery, everyone who works here has different spiritual and religious beliefs, but we all had to start at the same place, that coming-to-believe part, to get to where we are. As we progress in our sobriety, we can return to this principle of hope and this step by simply being open-minded enough to know that help is always available, no matter the issue. Hopelessness is not a feeling we ever have to go through anymore if we know that Power is available to everyone at any given moment if we only keep our minds open.
